Hi {!firstname},

Hope you're having a spectacular day! And if you're not,.....I'm about to make it better for you.

Dr. Graham here to inform you of an astounding number of chinks in the armor of healthcare delivery you can take advantage of to improve your medical care.

My newsletter agenda today:
1. Changing email newsletter format.
2. Medical article about doctor office appointment tactics.
3. Look at what's coming next.
4. Medical tips.
5. Resources for learning.
6. Feedback responses.

1. Newsletter Format Changes:

In my last newsletter I made the format wide, colorful, and flashy.  However, in order to make my newsletter easier to read for the large numbers of subscribers out there who either have only a small resolution computer screen (where they constantly have to scroll side to side to read the lines of text) or block all images, it's appropriate to conform as other newsletter editors do.

Please be aware that narrowing the newsletter on your screen will not cause you to become cross-eyed in the process.

2. Article:

"Medical Appointment Scheduling; The Smart Way To Save Time, Money And Frustration"

The cause......doctor's themselves. After eliminating the medical emergencies, illness of the doctor, and accidents, you may already have often wondered why your doctor can't seem to avoid the habit of being late for your appointment......like every time.

Felt like chewing him or her out for making you wait so long?  I have.  Appointment scheduling strategies are easy to use.

You can be more forgiving if you understand the reasons why long waits seem to be the standard for medical care. After telling you reasons why, I'll tell you strategies and tactics for avoiding extra long waits in the doctor's office.

Common reasons why delays occur:

1. Hospital meetings run overtime.
2. Doctor hurries up to get to a meeting.
2. Doctor's mental fatigue.

Doctor's often are required and expected to attend hospital staff, department, and committee meetings. Very few doctors are not members of hospital staffs. The meetings are in the morning just before most doctors start their office hours. The hour long meetings often run overtime. So getting to the office to see patients will be delayed automatically after those meetings.

Some hospital meetings for doctors are over the lunch hour and result in the doctor being late in starting the afternoon appointment schedule. Can you detect two areas of time when your scheduled appointment will be delayed?

The other healthcare appointment issues which happen frequently in late morning and late afternoon are visits that are cut short.

You guessed it.....the doctor is in a hurry to make a noon or evening meeting.

After you've waited for an hour to see your doctor, and then have your visit cut short on top of the delays, it's very frustrating .....often requiring you to reschedule another appointment to finish up what you had intended to complete on the first visit.

Does that add up to costing you more gas and babysitter money?

Then there's the added problem in the late morning and late afternoon appointment schedules of the doctor becoming mentally fatigued, less attentive to your medical complaints, less focused on appropriate treatments and options, and more focused on finding a minute or two to clear the mind between patients.

Look at it this way:

The doctor arrives late for his first morning appointment and tries to hurry to catch up with the appointment schedule over the first three or four patients. By mid morning he or she is caught up, but then starts to hurry through patients to make the noon meeting on time--if there is a meeting.

Same thing in the afternoon. Late to arrive at the office after the noon luncheon meeting and catches up by mid afternoon. Hurrying up to finish the afternoon schedule happens.

A common tendency for doctors, once caught up in their appointment schedule (mid-morning or mid-afternoon), is to feel more relaxed. They spend more time talking to patients when that happens---patients get more attention.

Don't get me wrong! These events are not at all intentional or divisive. I'm quite sure that a good deal of the process is entirely unconscious, or is a subconscious means of avoiding stress.

Of course, doctors are continually interrupted with phone calls, consultant issues, and even problems at home.

Are you ready for appointment solutions?

  • Always make your appointments with your doctor for mid morning or mid afternoon (the former preferred).

  • Schedule your appointment for mid-week. Doctors are flooded with Friday and Monday "couldn't wait" problems.

  • For serious medical problems which you believe will take more than one doctor visit to resolve, schedule a second appointment about a week after the first appointment. Do it at the same time as you schedule the first appointment.
(like a second visit to follow-up on the medical problem
    or lab tests)--thinking ahead.

  • Don't take children into the exam room with you. The distractions that occur sharply reduces your time with the doctor and treatment needs.

These are the things I've found to be true.
