1. Comments: "Good doctor traits"

Ever wonder what makes a good doctor, or why you are totally comfortable relating to him or her?  Beyond trusting your doctor, there are some aspects of personality which subconsciously strike you as congenial.

Let me give you my opinion about the things in the doctor's personality that enrich your trust but also put your mind at peace.

*Doctor's greeting: When you have finally taken the time to make an appointment, wait to see the doctor, and have the nurse take your vital signs and then wait again for the doctor to appear, you want to know immediately on the doctor's arrival face to face that you are welcome in the doctor's presence, and not another chore he or she is forced to do that day---and your efforts were all worth it.

The greeting from the doctor in that first 30 seconds in the room gives you the answer.  Any doctor worth their salt will immediately give you eye to eye contact (all the attention is on you), gently shake your hand or touch you gently while speaking (it's a deep pleasant human social gesture), and speak to you.

The actual words coming out of the doctor's mouth should be friendly, not rushed, and usually attached to a smile.  Words spoken gently and in a positive context in coordination with the factors mentioned above, all in that first 30 seconds, determines what benefits you will achieve from the doctor that visit.

A good doctor takes the time (about 15 to 30 seconds) to put you at ease using these gestures.

You know instinctively when the doctor enters the room holding and scanning your medical chart, no direct eye contact, or quickly sits down at the computer to review your past visit, without a greeting and often with a throat clearing noise---you are in for a crappy and less than complete office visit.

You do not have to put up with that attitude from the doctor.  And, it is your right to point out to the doctor verbally that you are not there to "bother" him or her.  That creates immediate guilt feelings of neglect of a patient in the doctor's mind, and just as quickly, will bring out a more pleasant personality as well as improve how you are treated that visit.

There's a lot more to this but I will have to delay that for a future comment.

"How To Make Your 8 Minutes With
The Doctor Count"

(Part 3 or 3)

Listen....you can't kid me.  You're so overjoyed just to get one minute with your doctor it's unbearable--or not.  Why in the world would you want another 7 minutes sitting there just staring at each other?

Thankfully, I never ever met a medical patient who didn't have at least 45 minutes of stored up questions, comments, and medical problems for me to react to the instant I poked my head into the exam room.  Boredom was never an issue!

Remember in part one we covered the factors involved in preparation for the short visit, and in part two we covered the array of issues that interfere with your interaction with the doctor, ways to handle those, and how to use every minute in the exam room to extract from your doctor as much information as you can.

Now, it's time to wake up to the various aspects of the visit which are of great benefit to you, and which most patients overlook.

Once the doctor has left the exam room with his or her duties completed in your case, you have loads of options for gathering move value from the visit.  Hard to believe, isn't it?

I'll mention here just a few of those options that contribute to your healthcare you should always take advantage of:

1. Samples of medications: For years drug companies have promoted their prescription and over the counter medications by sending Santa Clause (Pharmaceutical Reps) to doctor's offices to spy on who else has been leaving medication samples in the office sample closet, and to leave a pile of their own company products.

The psychology of it is---if the doctor puts you on a medication and happens to have a few free samples to give you, it inevitably leads to you remaining on the medication, if your condition requires it, for months and even years.  So all the money spent by you or your health insurance adds up to a bundle of money that the competition missed out on.

In recent years the "sampling" has decreased to some extent, drug reps have moved on to better jobs, and the post office delivers the samples that doctor's request.  So, most doctors continue to have samples which are usually available.

ACTION: Always ask for samples of medications you usually take-- from the nurse, other healthcare provider, doctor, or front desk person when you check out.  Saves money you can use for other things.

2. Medical Literature: Be sure to request any literature the office may have available which has to do with your medical problems.  An endocrinologist treats diabetes and has the latest info on diabetes.  An OB-GYN advises on contraception and has info on the various methods you might need to know about.

Some physicians want their patients to understand what they feel about their practice and what they treat.  They compose articles and information sheets to hand out to patients on these various topics.

It's a means of avoiding the white-washed information found in commercial pamphlets, and biased information put out by the drug companies who provide literature to offices as well.

If your physician has those available, compliment your doctor about it.

ACTION: Ask for any information they have available. Sometimes it is kept out of sight and patients never know they have such a thing.  They save it only for "special" patients.  Make yourself a special patient by asking for them.

3. Special care: I particularly like this advantage you can use over and over again successfully.  Make it a point on every visit to try to engage each member of the office staff at one time or another in a personal conversation, even if only for a minute or so.

Be friendly, cordial, pleasant, thankful and avoid being upset, aggressive, complaining about your care.

If you make friends with the staff, you will be one of the first patients they will call for an earlier appointment opening, the one who gets first choice of longer appointments, the one who is the recipient of the best care and treatment in that office.  And, the doctor will subconsciously spent more time with you as a result.

ACTION: Let your best personality show up in the office and you'll discover you will receive better service there than 95% of patients.

NOTE: You have to ask for these things.  Usually, the office staff is too busy to remember to offer what is available---so you have my permission to bug the hell out of them until they respond.
