Dr. Graham here.  It seems that just the thought that this is just another rip-off by our doctors, or healthcare system adds to the increasing disgust with how doctors are treating patients---talking here about the use of placebos (pills and shots that contain no therapeutic effects).

It all started a couple thousand years ago when very little was known about diseases, and less about how to treat them.  Patients were given all kinds of herbs and medicinal compounds for their medical problems which sometimes worked.  So doctors began to use drugs and herbs over the centuries which were the only treatment for disease known whether they helped or not.

By the 1800s patients got a lot smarter about medicine and became aware that most of the medications didn't do anything.  The use of these ineffective medications (placebos) dwindled to almost nothing.

As science improved, research documented effectiveness of drugs, and physicians were much better educated the use of drugs in medical therapy became routine.  However, lurking in the background of centuries of medical care remained the dilemma of why there were some medicines which worked on some patients and not on others.

Research showed that patients often have a positive effect to medications and/or treatments which were known to be ineffective.  Current studies have opened a whole new area of investigation into why this happens.  The effects are real--just don't know how it happens or causes for it.

Because placebo meds do work, investigations into how far this effect on humans can be extended in the advancement of medical care is part of the research into how the brain functions.

Placebos have taken on a completely new perspective in the eyes of doctors, enough so that their use is no longer considered a useless medical treatment.

In order to make you aware of this niche in medical care coming into sight in the last decade, my article should provide you with a better understanding about placebos.  And, that placebos do have a positive effect in the treatments of many medical disorders.

Article:

“Placebo Mind Control Therapy Works”

A Placebo works almost as effectively as prayer.  There have been many documented clinical cases throughout the medical literature of patients who have had remarkable improvement in their diseases without any other known cause.

A case study reported in the February/March 2009 edition of the Scientific American Mind details such a case.  Mr. Wright, nearly dead of tumors in his neck choking him when he received an injection of Krebiozen, an antitumor drug.  Three days later the tumors had reduced in size by 50%, and he was up walking around happy.

After 10 days on the treatment, he was discharged as cured, while other patients had no response to the drug.  After reading reports about the questionable effectiveness of Krebiozen, Mr. Wright suffered a relapse with recurrence of the tumors.  This admission the doctors decided to give him a placebo med injection course of treatment, but told him that they now had a double strength Krebiozen they were using.

This second course of treatment cured him even faster than the first one.  He remained tumor free for two months.  After reading a report that proved Krebiozen was worthless, Mr. Wright had another relapse and died 3 days later.

Other possible causes of placebo cures are:

    1.   Total coincidence—things happen at coincidental times more
than one can imagine in all our lives which go unexplained.

2.   Belief in God and prayer—so strong and intensely doctors are often amazed at how patients recover so fast and completely when only a slow limited recovery seemed to be expected.

3.   Doctors lied—must have used other potent antitumor drugs to get Mr. Wrights tumors to disappear and never put it in the records.

4.   Devine miracles—recorded in the medical literature are many spontaneous dramatic recoveries and cures of fatal diseases without medical treatment of any kind, and remain cured for the rest of their lives.

What do physicians already know about placebo effects?

Doctors are quite aware that placebos have helped alleviate, depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s Disease, inflammatory diseases, and even malignancy.

Hypnosis can create the same results as placebos in many medical or mental disorders.  Self hypnosis is known to be of value as well.

A common and yet subtle effectiveness of seeing a white coat and a stethoscope creates a subconscious placebo reaction, if a patient relates those items to feeling good.

Subliminal tactics create well known positive reactions relating to relaxation, stress, anxiety, and even weight loss—much like meditation.

How do researchers explain the effects of a placebo?

It’s very obvious that placebo effects are the result of modification of brain processes.  It doesn’t occur in every person, nor does it affect all people the same way.  The variable responses to placebo meds or triggers seems to stem from subconscious or subliminal conditioning.

Others believe the effects grow out of subconscious associations between recovery/healing and past experiences of being treated and getting well again.

Whatever the interaction is, control of the brain responses is evident.  The brain can be trained to control bodily responses by feedback mechanisms—such as biofeedback for lowering blood pressure and relieving migraine headaches.

Interestingly, the conscious mind by bringing into it a series of positive thoughts such as faith that a treatment will work, unquestionably causes good results when placebos are used.  The opposite is also true—negative thoughts cause poor results.  Consider just how important your thoughts are in bringing about expectations or dreams for good things in your life.  That’s why negative attitudes destroy a person’s life in many ways.

Applying the same thoughts to your self-esteem, positive thinking in the process of self-improvement increases self-esteem more effectively than most any other form of therapy.

Medical studies have shown that a placebo med can create a response by the brain to initiate the chemical and biologic effects of the real drug they believed they took.

What maximizes the placebo effect?

·         Personality has no effect on a person’s susceptibility to a placebo.

·         Physician praising the results of the placebo, prescribing increased doses of the placebo, spending more time with the patient—subconscious creation
of trust.

·         High price tag on the drug they think they are getting.

·         The more elaborate the medical procedure the better the placebo works.

·         Sham surgery for Parkinson’s Disease.

Since placebo usage faded out in the 1800s, the renewed research has not only revived the use of placebos, but also documented their value in treatment of human disease and disorders.  Discovering more ways to apply placebo therapy will in the future increase the effectiveness of drugs and surgery.

Application of placebos to athletes to boost performance without using forbidden drugs in competition is one of the future treatments on the horizon.

The most impressive use of placebos will be the use of them to manipulate the conscious and subconscious mind in ways that cure medical problems.

Physicians are expected to increase their use of placebo meds in the near future as a result of research results.  So, if you discover your doctor has treated you with a placebo, don’t be upset—just give your doctor a pat on the back for improving your medical care.
