1. Conflict and Disgust!

When you're young busy and enjoying all the "firsts" in your life, it's pleasant to be distracted by those happenings and not look at the times you will face in old age, at least for most of us. Eventually, comes a rude awakening concerning old age, nursing homes, rehab centers and disabilities which could be in your future.

My recent experiences with nursing homes and rehab centers has burned into my brain complete disgust and aggravation about how the elders in my family have been treated.

Have you ever heard the saying, "I'd rather die on the sidewalk than be placed in a nursing home to suffer."  I'm beginning to agree with that seeming ridiculous statement. I intend to write about and inform the unaware of how bad our medical system has become for the aged.  Maybe even stimulate you to write letters to your congressmen to shape up and correct it.

My wife has had a few trips to rehab centers over the past few years so I have had a bit of direct frightening experiences which even this doctor is sickened by.  Such things as no response at all to the patient call button or a hour delay in responding, after admission the patient is not seen by a physician for 48 hours, patient admitted and laid into a hospital bed the wrong end first, and 10 minutes of physical therapy once a day, are just the tip of the iceberg.

I won't even get into the issue of the quality of medical staff---but I will in later issues.  You should be very skeptical
--even afraid.

2. Article:

"How To Make Your Eight Minute Visit
With Your Doctor Count"

(Part 2 of 3)

Never do it!  The last thing you want to do is handicap the doctor in any way from giving you 100% of his or her attention in the exam room.

Other than the many ways to get more time with the doctor mentioned in Part 1, there are several more important things you need to do to guarantee you the best medical care possible.

  • A.    The importance of good communication tactics:

  • B.    The importance of educating yourself about your own
    medical problems.

  • C.    Importance of trusting your doctor.

  • D.   Importance of follow-up visits.

Most important and absolutely necessary is for you to completely inform the doctor of all symptoms, unusual signs you’ve noticed, and any history of having these problems prior. Your doctor formulates a diagnosis based on everything you reveal and the findings evident on your exam to reinforce your information.

Often, patients neglect to mention mild or intermittent symptoms which they consider irrelevant to their present condition, yet which the doctor may find very relevant. It’s a good idea to lay them all on the doctor and not be afraid you are wasting time or bothering your doctor with garbage.

The consequence of your holding back on your medical information results in the doctor being misled, making a wrong diagnosis, prescribing medication that doesn’t work, and ordering unnecessary tests to be done.  Be honest.

Patients who search out and educate themselves about their own disease or medical problems are able to explain to the doctor in clear understandable terms more exactly what is bothering them medically.

It leads to better diagnosing and treatment of you by
your doctor.

Consider also when you know more about your medical problems you are much more likely to know when a significant or bad symptom shows up.  You get it handled quicker and avoid letting it get worse.

You’d be surprised how often doctors see patients who have had a symptom or medical problem, watch to see if it will get worse over time, wait to go to the doctor until it gets much worse, and didn’t want to bother their doctor with minor signs.

It all leads to a much more difficult treatment process.

Trusting your doctor is important---actually very critical. It’s well known that patients who don’t trust their doctor, or are at least skeptical of his/her knowledge or skills, will not take the prescribed medication or not all of it.  Additionally, patients won’t listen or follow the doctor’s medical advice.

If you don’t completely trust your doctor, go to another doctor.

Trusting also becomes a severe barrier in medical follow-up.  Sure, you thought the lab tests he ordered were unnecessary so you didn’t do them.  What about the consultation with another doctor your doctor ordered that you skipped?

The belief that your doctor orders tests to be done just for the fun of it or has a part ownership in the lab with a lust for money, is a very rare occurrence.

You have to understand when a doctor orders a procedure or test to be done on you, somewhere in her mind is the true medical reason for doing it—and may not be known to you.  It may be for reasons of confirming a diagnosis the doctor already has made just to be sure.

It may be the one key to your real medical problem when the diagnosis is tentative.  The consult ordered may be because your doctor may need to refer you to a doctor with more expertise in dealing with your problem---but will never admit it to you.

Following through with your doctor’s advice and instructions whether you agree or not is SMART---you don’t know what you don’t know.

Of course there are many more such issues to be considered.  The things that occur in the exam room with the doctor and nurse are for your benefit---and a secondary benefit to your family in keeping you strong and healthy.

These are the things I've found to be true.

4. Medical Tips and Interesting Bits:

  • Doctors can see you on their cell phones.
    eWeek
magazine (Dec. 15, 2008) reports that the Apple iPhone has the capability for physicians to access your digital medical images such as x-rays on the go. Actually, Cedara WebAccess hosted by Merge Healthcare can be used on any Internet devise. Your doctor must have an account with the company to get access to your information.

  • Move objects with your mind.
Scientists at Emotiv have created a brain wave reading headset that lets a person give mental commands with their mind. It's expected within 10 years you will be able to mentally turn on your stereo to the music that cheers you up. Or, open doors in front of you as long as your wearing a sensor device on your head.  Maybe mentally start your car as you are crossing the parking lot. (Inc.Magazine-Dec.08)
